With all of the upset going on over in Libya, and the gas prices here in America pushing upwards, there has been a lot of talk lately about CNG cars. We have put together a list of a few commonly asked questions in order to set the record straight and to give those looking into purchasing a CNG car the information that they need before making that decision.

Do CNG Cars mix CNG with gasoline?

No. Compressed Natural Gas is it’s own fuel source that can be pumped into the engine. The engine has the ability to run off of gasoline or natural gas without changing any of the components of the engine. When a CNG car kit is installed, CNG injectors are added to the engine as well as a switch. When the switch is activated, the engine will either recieve gasoline, or compressed natural gas, but the engine never receives a mixture of these two fuels.

Do CNG cars last longer than normal cars?

Yes. If you don’t believe us, contact any airport shuttle service or bus service that has CNG converted vehicles. CNG cars on average last up to 500,000 thousand miles before the engines start having problems. By converting your car over to a CNG vehicle with a kit, you will prolong the engine of the vehilce, thus making your vehicle last much longer. CNG increases the value that you get from the vehicle that you convert as it will definitely pay you back over the long run with a long lasting engine.

How Much Cheaper are CNG cars than regular cars?

Gasoline is on the rise, but the average price for a gallon of CNG is $.74 cents. That is incredibly cheaper than the price of gasoline. The important thing to understand is that CNG vehicles usually have smaller gas tanks than a traditional gasoline car. This means that you will need to fill up more often, but when a car is converted to CNG through the use of a cng car kit, the vehicle can run off of gasoline or CNG at the flip of the switch. This is the best option as you can never have to worry about running out of gas because the vehicle runs off of either form of fuel.

Are CNG Cars safe?

Many people think that CNG cars are much more dangerous due to their aluminum composite tank that is under pressure. The scientific evidence proves otherwise. In fact, CNG cars are much safer than your regular car with a gas tank. If you don’t believe us, watch this.

Do CNG cars see a huge drop in engine performance?

The answer to this question is that it depends on the CNG kit that you install. Some kits are better than others, but the high performing kits only see about a 5% decrease in engine power. This number is so miniscule that you will litereally never notice the difference.

Summary

As you can see, CNG cars are incredible vehicles, and the fact is that any vehicle can be converted into a CNG vehicle. If your state has a strong CNG infrastructure, you can save some serious money when it comes to low fuel costs. Not only will you save money, but your vehicle will run much longer, making the vehicle easily pay for itself in the long run.

If you are interested in CNG cars and have been thinking of converting your vehicle to run off of compressed natural gas, there are several home CNG converstion kits on the market. In order to give you the best information on these cng conversion kits, here is our review of the DIEL CNG conversion kit.

Features:

The DIEL kit can be purchased and installed on diesel and gasoline engines.

They provide two different kits in order to provide you with CNG cars.

The first kit is called the “Mixer Air Intake” kit which is easier to install and that costs less

The second kit is called the “Sequential Injection” kit which is higher cost, higher quality, and is harder to install.

The kits are sold in gasoline and diesel categories, and differ on engine size and cylinder count.

Our Review:

The idea of having a CNG kit shipped to your home is somethig that mechanics get excited about. The thing that makes these types of kits different is that they mix CNG with diesel directly. Other CNG conversion kits simply allow the user of the cng cars to flip a switch to switch fuel sources. Because of this, the kit does not have a computer that manages the fuel intake, as the valves and hoses automatically feed the engine with CNG whenever the car is operating. The kits also do not come equipped with aluminum composite CNG tanks, which means that you will have to pay for those seperately.

Negatives:

The biggest thing wrong with this kit is the lack of control that you have. When the car is on, so is the CNG, which is not what most people want. While it can enhance diesel engine performance, and help the diesel to last longer, the biggest downside to this kit is finding someone to install it. This kit is not EPA certified, which is an important thing to note depending on what state you live in. The problem is that this kit is very complex, and is just not sophisticated enough to give you the performance that you really want.

Positives:

If you are a motor head and love to install things, this could be a great way to get more out of your diesel truck. This kit has not been tested or given ratings, so it really is a no-name kit, so install it at your own risk.

Conclusion:

We would give this kit a 2 out of 5 star rating. The biggest reason for this is that it lacks a computer controller, and while it is sold as an “at home” kit, it is way too complicated for the average person to install. This kit lacks the components in order to be a real contender, which is why we give this kit only 2 stars.

It’s that time of year again when the gas prices start hiking very quickly. Gas is already well above $3 dollars a gallon and will probably be very similar to the summer of 2008 when gas was well above $4 dollars a gallon. With Obama touting that green jobs will eventually hit America, there are things we can do as Americans right now. One of these things is getting a CNG conversion kits for cars put on our cars. The national average price of natural gas is sitting around $.70 cents per gallon. I know it sounds insane, but its true! If gas really does get up there this summer, you will be able to easily pay for a CNG kit just from the savings you gain from not using gasoline this up coming summer.

Many people wonder where they can get a CNG kit and how hard they are to install. Let me just first of all say that if you are a mechanic and love working on cars, this will not be a problem at all for you. If you don’t know anything about cars, PLEASE pay someone to do this. If you don’t install this correctly, can permanently damage your car and that’s a lot of wasted money out the window if that happens. CNG conversion kits start at about $2,500 dollars. You can usually pay someone for the kit and the install for about $3,500-$5,000 dollars. I know this sounds like a lot but you need to consider these facts:

CNG cars last much longer. It is very common for engines on CNG cars to go well over 500,000 miles because of how much cleaner the engine runs

Natural Gas is so CHEAP!!! You can even get a pump that goes into your garage so you can fill your car up from home and never have to go to a gas station again.

With the kit install, your car is now a dual fuel vehicle. That means with the flip of a switch you can have the car run off of natural gas or regular gas at your discretion.

You are making the nation less dependent on foreign oil and putting a demand on natural gas.

CNG cars are much safer than gasoline engines and is safer in a car crash.

As you can see, the benefits are very high, and the years worth of savings from not using gasoline will easily pay for the conversion kit as well as the price of your car. If you have thought about a CNG conversion kit, now is a great time to put one in!

Many people are interested in the way CNG cars work and how good they are for the environment. The biggest worry on people’s mind seems to be the safety aspects of a CNG car. We wanted to dispel all the myths and set the record straight.

CNG tanks are primarily made of an aluminum composite material which is extremely durable and much stronger than the metal used in today’s regular gas tanks. These Aluminum composite tanks can withstand dynamite, gun fire, and 70 mph collisions.

Another safety feature of CNG cars is that if the integrity of the CNG tank is compromised at all there is a safety release valve which safely expends the natural gas within the tank.

Natural gas requires a lot more heat to be ignited unlike regular gas. Even if the car is on fire and the safety valve is releasing gas, it will not ignite unless the heat is above 1100 Degrees.

Filling a natural gas tank is not scary and is extremely safe. Compression is around 4000 lbs per square inch when filling, but the tanks are rated to hold much more than that, so the worry of explosion is absurd. If a small spark happened or a cigarette was lighted it would not compromise the ignition of natural gas as alot more heat is required to light natural gas.

As you can see, CNG cars are very safe and reliable. Don’t let safety be a concern if you are considering buying one of these types of vehicles.
